This piece was written during the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Without the labor of the writers and actors currently on strike, the film being covered here wouldn’t exist.

In the lead up to the release of the prequel film, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, the film that started it all—2012’s The Hunger Games, based on the first book in the trilogy by Suzanne Collins—will pay tribute and make its way to select theaters for two nights.

Fathom Events is partnering with Lionsgate—the studio behind all the Hunger Games movies—to bring Katniss Everdeen, Peeta, and Gale back to the big screen. The two-night engagement will take place on Sunday, October 15 and Wednesday, October 18, and you can check out their website here to see if a theater near you is participating.

“There’s no better way to whet the appetite for The Hunger Games prequel than with the original Hunger Games,” Kevin Grayson, Lionsgate’s president of domestic distribution, said in a pun-wincing statement. “We’re thrilled to be teaming with Fathom Events to give fans the opportunity to see The Hunger Games in theaters once again.”

The move, of course, is to get folks amped up for The Hunger Games franchise once more. It’s been eight or so years since the fourth film in the original series came out, and the powers that be are keen to get theater-goers back on The Hunger Game train before The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes—a prequel that focuses on the origin story of Coriolanus Snow, the tyrannical President of Panem that faces off against Katniss in the previous films—comes out on November 17, 2023.
